15 Monster Hunter Outlanders Tips the Game Never Tells You
Monster Hunter Outlanders has 300+ hours of depth — and a surprising number of systems it never bothers to explain.
These 15 tips come from 100+ hours of play including High Rank completion, extensive co-op sessions, and deep dives into systems the game glosses over or ignores entirely. If you're still discovering the game organically, skip this list. If you want to hunt smarter, read on.
15 tips from 100+ hours in Monster Hunter Outlanders — things the game never tells you.
1–5: Foundational Mechanics
1. The canteen buff stacks with endemic life bonuses. Most players know to eat before a hunt. Few know that certain endemic life creatures in your base camp provide passive buff stacks that compound with canteen meals. A fully upgraded Vigorbird colony in your Verdant Highlands camp adds +15 to maximum health — on top of the canteen's health boost. Check the Field Research Station to unlock these.
2. Sharpness matters more than raw attack at High Rank. A weapon at Purple sharpness deals roughly 25% more damage than the same weapon at Yellow sharpness. Before spending materials upgrading to the next weapon tier, check whether maintaining Purple sharpness via the Handicraft or Razor Sharp skill would outperform the damage increase from the new weapon.
3. You can redirect your Grapple Chain mid-flight. The Grapple Chain traversal tool introduced in Outlanders supports a directional input during the swing that most players never discover. Press the movement stick left or right during a chain swing to arc your trajectory. This is crucial for reaching Wound weak points on aerial monsters that are moving.
4. Trap timing resets when a monster limps. When a monster is limping toward its den to sleep, its trap immunity timer resets to zero. This is the best time to set a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap regardless of how recently you used one. The game doesn't tell you the immunity timer has reset — you have to test it.
5. The Scout Report multiplies investigation gold reward slots. Before accepting an investigation, check the Scout Report tab. Investigations with a "Detailed Footprints" or "Extensive Tracks" report attached have two extra gold reward slots — meaning materially more rare material drops per hunt. Always prioritize high-report investigations for farming rare parts.
6–10: Farming and Efficiency
6. Mining routes at your base out-scale hunt carves for common crafting materials. For materials used in bulk (Monster Bone M, Monster Bone L, various ores), fully upgraded base mining routes yield more per session than hunt carves. Build the Advanced Mining Facility in your base as soon as it unlocks — it delivers a passive income of bulk materials every time you return to camp.
7. SOS flares give the host bonus reward slots. Most players use SOS flares when struggling. The hidden benefit: the host of an SOS quest receives one additional reward slot compared to a private squad hunt. If you're specifically farming for a rare material (Gem, Plate), firing an SOS increases your expected drop rate per hunt.
8. Sleep bombing is the fastest way to get Gems. Put the target monster to sleep (Sleep ammo, Sleep Dual Blades coatings, or Sleeptoads in the environment), then wake it with the highest-damage attack your weapon has. Monsters take double damage from the first hit when woken from sleep — and rare carve rates are unaffected by this mechanic, meaning you're getting double-damage hits on a high-HP monster without any downside.
9. Wyvern Riding mounts deal Wound damage to specific parts. When you mount a monster via Wyvern Riding, directing it into another monster or environmental hazard applies Wound damage to the struck part. Two skilled hunters using Insect Glaive can cycle Wyvern Rides to rapidly accelerate the Wound meter on a specific part — particularly useful for Elder Dragon armor farming.
10. The Resource Exchange vendor refreshes on the in-game calendar, not real time. The Resource Exchange (the vendor who trades endemic life catches for rare decorations) refreshes its stock every in-game week — which passes when you complete 7 quests, not after 7 real-world days. Chain-completing short quests to cycle the vendor stock is a legitimate late-game decoration farming strategy.

11–15: Advanced and Multiplayer
11. Your base camp bonuses apply in multiplayer. When you join another player's lobby, your endemic life bonuses and base-camp passive buffs travel with you. A player with fully upgraded Vigorbird colonies and a maxed Canteen brings their passive HP and stat buffs to any session they join. Coordinating base bonuses in dedicated group plays is a high-level optimization most players miss.
12. The Clutch Shot (the new Grapple Chain attack) does not trigger roar stagger. When an Elder Dragon roars, most attacks get interrupted. The Clutch Shot — a ranged grapple-chain hook you can fire at a monster's Wound during a roar — doesn't get cancelled by the roar animation and lands even through it. It's a Greatsword and Switch Axe user's best tool for maintaining pressure during Elder Dragon roar spam.
13. You can fast travel to your base camp mid-hunt without penalty. Unlike previous games, Outlanders allows you to return to base camp mid-hunt via the Shelter menu without using a Farcaster (a consumable item). The cool-down is 3 minutes. Use this to restock potions, change equipment loadouts, or pick up Trap Tools you forgot. Most players don't discover this until late High Rank.
14. Multiplayer etiquette: never skin (carve) before all hunters are done. Carving a monster ends the hunt for everyone in your lobby. If you carve first while another player is still getting their post-hunt positioning or dealing with a palico interaction, you're cutting their carve sequence short. Wait for the "Carve ready" notification in the top-right corner — it appears when all hunters have been notified the monster is dead.
15. The arena counter at your base tracks every single quest completion. The Base Camp Arena counter (in the Records tab at the Field Research Station) logs every hunt, every quest, and every monster kill with timestamps. This isn't just a vanity stat — the Arena counter unlocks hidden titles and cosmetic rewards at specific milestones (100 quests, 500 monsters, 50 unique species hunted). Check it. You may be closer to free cosmetics than you think.
