Full Specifications
The Dell XPS 15 2026 is the definitive Windows laptop for creative professionals and power users who need a real discrete GPU. The 3.5K OLED display is one of the best screens ever shipped in a laptop, and the Intel Core Ultra 9 + Nvidia RTX 4060 combination handles 3D rendering, video editing, and machine learning workloads that the fanless MacBook Air cannot touch.
We used the XPS 15 as our primary Windows test machine for three months. Here is the full picture — including what Dell still needs to fix.
The OLED Display — Exceptional
The 15.6-inch 3.5K (3456x2160) OLED panel at 120Hz refresh rate is the centrepiece of the XPS 15, and it deserves every superlative. Blacks are true black. Colours are vivid and accurate, covering 100% of DCI-P3. HDR content on Netflix and Disney Plus looks as good as anything we have seen on a laptop screen.
For video editors working in colour-graded footage, the display accuracy at 400 nits typical brightness means you can make colour decisions on-device without an external monitor. Professional photographers will feel the same way. The 120Hz refresh makes scrolling and interface animations feel silky in a way that 60Hz OLED cannot match.
CPU and GPU Performance
The Intel Core Ultra 9 185H is a 16-core hybrid architecture processor that handles multi-threaded workloads — video encoding, compilation, and large dataset processing — with genuine speed. Paired with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM (upgradeable to 64 GB in two slots), it handles Adobe Premiere Pro 4K timelines without dropping frames.
The Nvidia RTX 4060 with 8 GB of VRAM is the real differentiator. We ran Blender 3D renders, Stable Diffusion image generation, and DaVinci Resolve GPU-accelerated exports — all of which performed significantly faster than the M4 MacBook Air. If your workflow is GPU-bound, the XPS 15 justifies its existence immediately.
Upgradeable Hardware
Dell gets credit for making the XPS 15 user-upgradeable. Both RAM slots and the M.2 SSD slot are accessible after removing the bottom panel. In an era when Apple solders everything, this is a genuine advantage for buyers who plan to use a laptop for 5+ years. Buying 16 GB now and upgrading to 32 GB in two years is a cost-effective strategy.
Thermal Performance
The XPS 15 runs hot under sustained GPU load. Rendering a 10-minute Blender scene at full CPU+GPU, the chassis reached 48°C on the keyboard deck and the fans became audible from across a room. Dell's thermal management throttles the GPU at around 75W sustained — below the nominal 80W TDP — to prevent thermal shutdown.
In everyday use — browsing, documents, video calls — the fans are near-silent and temperatures are fine. The heat only becomes a factor during extended heavy rendering. A laptop cooling pad eliminates the problem entirely.
Battery Life
This is the XPS 15's biggest weakness. In real-world mixed use with the OLED at 60% brightness and occasional GPU activity, we averaged 6 hours 20 minutes. Heavy GPU use drops that to 3-4 hours. For a $1,299 laptop, this is disappointing — the MacBook Air M4 lasts almost three times longer on a charge.
If you work from a desk most of the time or always have access to a power outlet, battery life is not a dealbreaker. For coffee shop workers or frequent travellers who cannot guarantee a plug, the short battery is a serious consideration.
Who Should Buy It
The Dell XPS 15 2026 is the right choice for 3D artists, video editors, machine learning practitioners, and Windows power users who need Nvidia GPU performance in a premium chassis. The OLED display and upgradeable RAM are best-in-class for a Windows laptop. Accept the battery life and thermal trade-offs going in, and this machine will serve you well for years.
Choose the XPS 15 over the MacBook Air if you need Nvidia GPU power for 3D, gaming, or heavy ML workloads. The battery is a compromise but the raw performance makes up for it.
