Best AI Coding Agents in 2026: Claude Code vs Codex vs Antigravity vs Muse Code

Aug 20, 202612 min readClickWise Editorial

Four companies now want to live in your terminal: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and — as of three weeks ago — Meta. They all do roughly the same thing. They are not remotely the same product.

I compared Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Google Antigravity, and Meta's brand-new Muse Code on the numbers that matter: benchmark scores, speed, price, and the stuff benchmarks miss. Here's who should use what.

Inside this comparison

  • Real benchmark numbers, not vendor slides
  • What each agent costs per month
  • The speed vs. quality tradeoff nobody prices in
  • One recommendation per type of developer

What's the best AI coding agent in 2026?

For code quality, Claude Code — Claude Opus 4.8 leads SWE-bench Verified at 88.6% and beats Antigravity 64.3% to 55.1% on SWE-Bench Pro. For speed and price, Google Antigravity — 289 tokens/sec, 1M context, free in preview. Codex is the pick inside the ChatGPT ecosystem, and Meta's free Muse Code beta is the wildcard worth watching.

Comparison of AI coding agents in 2026

Four labs, four agents, one terminal. Choose carefully.

The field at a glance

AgentCompanyPriceStandout number
Claude CodeAnthropicfrom $20/mo88.6% SWE-bench Verified (Opus 4.8)
CodexOpenAIvia ChatGPT, from $20/moGPT-5.5: 82.7% Terminal-Bench 2.0
Antigravity 2.0GoogleFree (public preview)289 tok/s, 1M context
Muse Code (beta)MetaFree (beta)Launched Aug 5, Muse Spark 1.2

A note on reading that table honestly: every lab cherry-picks the benchmark where it wins. Anthropic quotes SWE-bench, OpenAI quotes Terminal-Bench, Google quotes throughput. The numbers above are real, but no single one settles the argument — which is why the rest of this article is about fit, not a trophy.

Claude Code: the quality pick

On hard, multi-file tasks, Claude Code is still the one to beat. The 64.3% vs 55.1% gap over Antigravity on SWE-Bench Pro is the difference between an agent that finishes a gnarly refactor and one that leaves you a half-done branch. It's slower (67 tok/s) and it costs money, but if you bill by the hour, wrong code is the most expensive thing an agent can produce.

The honest downside: on a big monorepo you'll feel the 200K context limit against Antigravity's 1M, and heavy daily use can push you past the $20 entry tier.

Antigravity: the speed-and-free pick

Google's agent is 4x faster, ships desktop + CLI + SDK, defaults to Gemini 3.5 Flash, and costs nothing during public preview. For prototyping, scripts, and everyday tasks, that combination is very hard to argue with. Where it stumbles is exactly where you'd expect: the hardest tasks, where its accuracy trails Claude Code by nine points. Free preview also means the pricing shoe hasn't dropped yet.

Codex: the ecosystem pick

Codex's pitch isn't a benchmark, it's convenience: if you already pay for ChatGPT, the agent is bundled into the subscription you have. GPT-5.5's 82.7% on Terminal-Bench 2.0 is a genuinely strong terminal-work score, and OpenAI's recent aggressive price cuts keep making the underlying API cheaper for anything you build yourself.

Muse Code: the wildcard

Meta's entry is three weeks old, free, and improving on a visible weekly cadence. It runs on Muse Spark 1.2 and hasn't published head-to-head numbers against the leaders, which tells you something by itself. But free is free, and Meta also open-sourced Muse Glimmer, a 30B agent model you can run on your own GPU — a self-hosted option none of the other three offers. Full thoughts in our Muse Code review.

Which one should you pick?

Match the agent to your situation
You ship production code for moneyClaude Code. The quality gap pays for itself the first time it nails a refactor another agent would botch.
You're learning or budget is $0Antigravity's free preview first, Muse Code beta second. Graduate to a paid agent when wrong answers start costing you time.
You already pay for ChatGPTCodex. Bundled access beats a second $20 subscription unless you hit its limits.
You want AI with no cloud at allMuse Glimmer on a 24GB GPU. Weaker than the cloud agents, but nobody sees your code.

💡 The two-agent setup most pros land on

Run a free agent (Antigravity or Muse Code) for boilerplate, scripts, and exploration, and reserve a paid one (Claude Code or Codex) for the tasks where a wrong answer costs you an afternoon. The $20/month buys you the escalation path, not every keystroke.

FAQ

What is the best AI coding agent in 2026?+
For raw code quality, Claude Code leads — Claude Opus 4.8 tops SWE-bench Verified at 88.6% and scores 64.3% on SWE-Bench Pro versus Antigravity's 55.1%. For speed and a free tier, Google Antigravity wins. Codex is the pick if you already pay for ChatGPT, and Meta's Muse Code is the new budget wildcard.
How much do AI coding agents cost?+
Claude Code, OpenAI Codex (via ChatGPT), Cursor, and Windsurf all start paid tiers around $20/month. Google Antigravity is free in public preview for individuals, and Meta's Muse Code is free in beta.
Is Google Antigravity better than Claude Code?+
Antigravity 2.0 is faster (289 vs 67 tokens/sec), has a 1M-token context window, and is free in preview. But Claude Code produces measurably higher-quality code on complex tasks. Speed favors Antigravity; correctness favors Claude Code.
What is Meta Muse Code?+
Muse Code is Meta's terminal coding agent, announced in beta on August 5, 2026 — its answer to Claude Code and Codex. It runs on Meta's Muse Spark 1.2 model and is the first coding product from Meta Superintelligence Labs.

One last thing: this market reprices monthly. Antigravity will eventually charge, Muse Code will eventually benchmark, and the price war keeps dragging everyone's costs down. Whatever you pick, re-evaluate in a quarter. In 2026, loyalty to a coding agent is just leaving capability on the table.
