The year I missed it

My burnout didn't announce itself. It leaked in as a series of small reclassifications I explained away one at a time. The AI piece deserves honesty in both directions. Agents genuinely removed the grind I used to complain about — boilerplate, test scaffolding, migration drudgery. The vacation test

Here's the diagnostic I wish someone had given me: take real time off — fully disconnected — and notice what happens on the last night. If you come back genuinely restored, you were exhausted; rest fixes exhaustion. I took two weeks, felt human by day ten, and then felt the dread reassemble itself, piece by piece, on the Sunday flight home. By Tuesday it was like the vacation had happened to someone else. That's the tell: burnout isn't a rest deficit, it's a conditions problem — and you can't vacation your way out of conditions you're flying straight back into.

  • Got a hobby back with zero metrics attached — no GitHub, no tracker, nothing shippable. Mine was cooking. The point was doing something badly, in private, for nobody
  • Physical basics, boringly: daily walks and a hard 9pm screen cutoff. Not transformative alone, but every other fix worked better on top of them

What's conspicuously absent: quitting. Sometimes leaving is the answer — if the conditions are structural and the org won't move, no personal system beats a bad environment. But I'd encourage trying to change the conditions first, if only because burnout follows people who don't: the same habits that cooked you at this job travel with you to the next one, and the honeymoon lasts about two quarters.
