Free Fire Tips for Beginners: 15 Things I Wish I Knew Before Playing

Oct 1, 20269 min readClickWise Editorial

Free Fire has a steep learning curve that the game never fully explains. These are the 15 things experienced players wish they had known before their first 50 matches.

From where to land to which gun to prioritize, these tips cover every recurring mistake beginners make in Free Fire — and exactly how to avoid them from day one.

Tip 1-3: Before You Land

Tip 1 — Never land under the flight path. The flight path is visible before your match begins. Every player in the match can reach locations directly under the path within 10 seconds of jumping. These locations will have 5-15 players fighting for the same loot. As a beginner, you will lose most of these fights. Land at least 600 meters from the direct flight path.

Tip 2 — Learn the map's low-traffic zones. Every Free Fire map has 2-3 areas that consistently have good loot but low player traffic. On Bermuda (the main map), the areas around Pochinok, Katulistiwa, and the factory area in the north-west spawn good gear reliably without drawing multiple squads. Land here for your first 20 games.

Tip 3 — Glide diagonally, not straight down. When jumping from the plane, gliding at a 45-degree angle covers more horizontal distance and lets you reach locations farther from the flight path while still landing at speed. Straight-down drops are only faster if you are landing directly under the plane.

Tip 4-7: Looting Priority

Free Fire loot priority order for beginners
Priority 1 — Armor (vest + helmet) — Pick up any armor immediately. Even a Level 1 vest reduces damage significantly. Never engage a fight without at least Level 1 armor.
Priority 2 — Primary weapon + ammo — Secure one primary weapon (AR or shotgun) in the first 30 seconds. Ammo for that weapon before anything else.
Priority 3 — Medkits and bandages — Carry at least 3 medkits at all times. Free Fire's damage model means you will take hits even in winning fights — healing speed is what separates survivors from eliminations.
Priority 4 — Second weapon — An SMG or pistol as a backup for close-range fights. Do not carry two ARs — they fill the same engagement range.
Priority 5 — Grenades — One smoke grenade and one frag grenade. Smoke covers retreats; frags flush campers. Skip if inventory is full of healing items.

Tip 8-10: Gun Selection

GunTypeBeginner RatingBest RangeWhy
SCARARS-tierMid-rangeHigh accuracy, easy recoil control, consistent damage
M4A1ARS-tierMid-rangeLow recoil, reliable at any skill level
MP40SMGA-tierClose rangeBest close-range DPS — great secondary weapon
Shotgun (M1887)ShotgunB-tierVery closeOne-shot potential but requires point-blank accuracy
AWM SniperSniperC-tier for beginnersLong rangeHigh skill floor — avoid until experienced
VSSMarksmanB-tierMid to longAuto-fire with scope — easier than bolt-action snipers

Tip 8 — Start with SCAR or M4A1. These two ARs are the easiest guns in Free Fire to use effectively. Their recoil patterns are predictable and their damage output is consistent across all engagement ranges beginners will encounter. Resist the temptation to use the AWM until you have 50+ hours played.

Tip 9 — Always carry a close-range weapon. ARs are weak at very close range (under 10 meters). Every engagement in a building will put you inside 10 meters. An MP40 or M1887 shotgun as your second weapon covers this gap. Players who carry two ARs consistently lose building fights.

Tip 10 — Attach scopes to everything. A 2x scope on an AR increases effective range by 40%. Free Fire spawns scopes frequently — attach any 2x or 4x scope you find to your primary weapon immediately.

Tip 11-13: Movement and Survival

Tip 11 — Crouch when shooting, sprint when moving. Free Fire's accuracy system heavily rewards crouching during gunfights. Crouching reduces spread by approximately 30% and makes you a smaller target. The habit of crouch-fire (sprint to cover, crouch, fire, sprint away) is one of the most important movement skills in the game.

Tip 12 — Heal when below 70% HP, not 20%. Most beginners heal only when critically low. This is dangerous because Free Fire fights often involve burst damage — you can go from 70% to 0% in one engagement with a good player. Keep a medkit active whenever you are below 70% HP during the post-fight window.

Tip 13 — Know when to rotate vs when to fight. The safe zone shrinks throughout the match. Many beginners engage fights late-game while standing in the zone boundary — taking zone damage and enemy fire simultaneously. When in doubt, run to zone first and fight second.

Tip 14-15: Character and Communication

Tip 14 — Start with Alok. Alok is the best beginner character in Free Fire because his Drop the Beat ability provides healing and movement speed with no complex activation requirements. For beginners who are still learning the game, having a character whose ability "just works" without precise timing is more valuable than a higher-ceiling ability that requires setup.

Tip 15 — Use the quick-ping system in squads. Free Fire has a ping system that communicates enemy location, loot, and movement intent without voice chat. Beginners playing with strangers often stay silent and miss critical information sharing. Learn the ping shortcuts: single tap pings a location, double tap pings enemy spotted, hold for directional pings.

⚠️ The Biggest Beginner Mistake

The single most common Free Fire beginner mistake is fighting everyone they see, regardless of their own gear level, position, or health. Survival in Free Fire rewards patience. In your first 30 games, make 'reach top 20' your goal — not most kills. You will learn positioning and zone management, which matter more than mechanical aim at the beginner stage.

Your First Week in Free Fire: A Plan

Free Fire beginner week-by-week plan
Day 1-2 — Complete the tutorial. Play 5 casual solo games focusing only on landing away from the flight path and looting without dying. Don't chase kills.
Day 3-4 — Play 5 more casual games focusing on reaching the top 30. Begin learning the SCAR's recoil by practicing against AI in training mode.
Day 5-6 — Join a duo or squad with one other person. Communication practice — share loot, call enemy positions, coordinate movement.
Day 7 — Enter your first ranked match. Apply the landing, looting, and zone rotation habits. Don't worry about rank — observe what kills you and adjust.
What should beginners do first in Free Fire?+
Land away from the flight path, secure armor and a primary weapon (SCAR or M4A1) within 30 seconds, stock 3+ medkits, and reach the safe zone before engaging anyone. Survival first, kills second.
What is the best gun for beginners in Free Fire?+
SCAR and M4A1 are the best beginner guns — low recoil, consistent damage, effective at all engagement ranges you will encounter. Pair either with an MP40 for close-range coverage.
How do you survive longer in Free Fire?+
Land far from the flight path, heal at 70% HP (not 20%), crouch when shooting, rotate to the safe zone before the boundary forces you, and avoid engagements until you have Level 2+ armor and a full primary weapon loadout.
